7+ Taskbar Tweaker for Windows 10 Creators Update: early alpha version

A couple of days ago I’ve published a post about the state of 7+ Taskbar Tweaker for Windows 10 Creators Update, which became available recently. During these days, I’ve worked on fixing the most significant issues in order to make the tweaker work with the new update. For those of you who donated for the porting effort, you can get an experimental alpha version here (link removed).

Please note that for now, the only aspects which were tuned are the ones that prevented the tweaker from loading at all (some technical information can be found here). That means that while some options work in the alpha version, others require more work and fine tuning, and this will come in future alpha versions. For the first alpha version, the focus was to publish a working version as quickly as possible.

Alpha version changelog

  • v5.2.9.2 (April 18): Fixed a crash on a multi-monitor environment.
  • v5.2.9.3 (April 29): All known issues were fixed. If you find any issues with this version, please let me know.

Update (May 4): The first public beta version is available! More details here.

does an earlier donation “count” too?

  2. Donatas says:

Awesome beans! This early alpha already does everything I use the tweaker for!
    – Ungroup taskbar buttons (single most important feature)
    – Middle-click close
    – Control sound with scroll

    Thank you!

    • Donatas says:

I was too quick 🙂 ^^ only applies to a single display setup. At work with multiple monitors (3) I get a “Could not load library (5)” or (1004) error messages and then explorer restarts.
Waiting for a more complete fix 🙂

      • Dinesh says:

I think this could be the cause. Because I am using dual monitor setup too for both Laptop and Desktop. Let me check and feedback.

        • Dinesh says:

Just tested. It is confirmed that Multi Monitor Setup is causing the issue.
Application is working if I only use single monitor.

    • Stefan says:

      Dual monitor setup also.

Also getting error “Could not load library (5)”

  3. Dinesh says:

Thank you for the fast alpha release.

However, still facing the same error.
Able to view and select the options but they are not working. 🙁

  4. Hibino says:

    Thanks for the good work.
Just want to report this: the alpha version worked on my laptop running 15063.138 so I just upgraded my desktop to 15063.138 too, but on my desktop it shows the could not load library error with code 1004. Shouldn’t both 15063.138 explorer.exe the same?

  5. Tim says:

I installed the alpha version but I’m still getting the library loading error. I can open the program and see the settings window, but none of the functions are working like how Donatas described above.

  6. erick says:

    I donated twice,but i can’t get the download link.pls help and check it.Thanks.

  7. Christian says:

Same for me as for Hibino. First error code 1004, now it shows error code 5.

  8. Stefan says:

When trying to download the software:

Could not send the email because of a server error. Please try again later.
    The following error has occurred:
mail() [function.mail]: Sorry, the server has not relayed this email, more emails were sent today than allowed.

  9. Brad says:

Made a donation, but getting an error on the alpha version request page:

“Sorry, the server has not relayed this email, more emails were sent today than allowed”

  10. Andrew Johnson says:

I’m unable to download despite having donated in the past. Your website is sending this error:

mail() [function.mail]: Sorry, the server has not relayed this email, more emails were sent today than allowed.

  11. Brian says:

Received the below error when submitting my e-mail address:

Could not send the email because of a server error. Please try again later.
    The following error has occurred:

Oops, your webhosting doesn’t like sending too much e-mails – mail() [function.mail]: Sorry, the server has not relayed this email, more emails were sent today than allowed.

  13. Stefan says:

Thanks for making 7+TT available for Creators Update. Have to report that my favorite feature is yet not working: Taskbar always on but in the background of any window. It used to work perfect with “Advanced option” – “disable_topmost” – “2”. But now in taskbar options “Automatically hide the taskbar in desktop mode” is always checked after restart when 7+TT is installed which means the taskbar is nervously fading out.

  14. AKAH says:

  15. J.D. says:

I get “Could not load library (1004)” or “Could not load library (5)” when the Windows “Show taskbar on all displays” setting is enabled (works fine without it).

  16. wmassingham says:

Complains that it could not load library (5). 🙁

I’m on the creators update, version 1703, build 15063.138.

  17. Marty says:

I have installed the early alpha version but get the following message upon launch:

“Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item”

I am also unable to uninstall TT, either nothing happens or i get the error message above.

    • Marty says:

      UPDATE:

I discovered this error was due to Avast antivirus blocking it. Adding TT to the exclusion list solved the problem and i can run TT without any error message.

One thing i’ve noticed so far, however, is that the “virtual desktop order fix” doesn’t work at present as taskbar icon order is not preserved when switching between desktops. I know this is early alpha, but just thought i would mention it.

Michael, could you tell me, does the feature to check for updates apply to the alpha versions of TT? Or is this something that’s only active in the final full versions? Thanks

      • the “virtual desktop order fix” doesn’t work at present as taskbar icon order is not preserved when switching between desktops

That should be fixed in v5.2.9.3, among other things. Please try it.

does the feature to check for updates apply to the alpha versions of TT

        No, only to final versions.

  18. Lincoln says:

Thank you so much for the Alpha release(s). I just installed 5.2.9.2 on my two laptops, both running Windows 10 version 15063.138, and 7TT appears to be working normally on both. As in, once I installed the new version it appears that all my previous settings were still in place, and still working. Gratitude!

Same response for me too 🙁

    • Donny says:

      I’m getting this same error.

    • Aleksandras says:

Same happened to me.. Is it a daily limit, will it start to work tomorrow? 😉

  20. Alex says:

I am trying to request the alpha version but every time I input my email, I receive an error message. When I submit a different email, the system correctly identifies that no donation was made under that different email.

    Please advise.

  21. Troik says:

v5.2.9.2 does already do everything I need it to do, great work man, thanks for taking the time.

  22. Alex says:

I got the link to update and apparently it is working just fine for me, with 2 monitors.
    Thanks a lot.
    Alex

  23. Jonathan Besler says:

    Hey,
I donated too but forgot to add the codeword. Please send me the link via mail.
Thanks for the great work! 🙂

  24. M Al says:

I just donated but can’t get access to your alpha version – does it require a certain time?

  25. andy says:

I can’t download the file even. Getting the same error as other people. Can I get any link?

  26. elebego says:

avast antivirus claims your app is dangerous so doesnt let it work

  27. a says:

    Thank you!

  28. Timothy says:

So glad to have 7TT back! The only thing not working for me is “combining” doesn’t do anything. But other than that, the tweaks are back.

  29. Kirk Weber says:

Will absolutely donate more when I get some money. Awesome work, however.

  30. Ryunam says:

I really want to take this opportunity and time to thank you for your continued efforts and the dedication you poured into this. For some users like myself, the tweaks enabled by your software do make an immense difference in terms of usability, enhancing the experience of using Windows and making it pleasing and overall more efficient.

I will be downloading the new alpha version later on, but in the meantime I was wondering if this alpha version also allows removing the width limit for the taskbar when in vertical mode. That would definitely make my day while also being the final piece of the puzzle needed to make me install W10 CU. 🙂

  31. Prophet says:

So I donated but I cant download it… Can you send me the download on email? Thank you.

  32. Fan of +7TT says:

When is it going to be published? Is there an estimated time? I have no chance for giving a donation, unless you accept gratitude and respect. I’d like to use your software once again.

  33. Eric says:

Any prediction of when the software will be released to the public if there are no more bugs? Thank you.

  34. Alfonso says:

    Man, you are the one.
No kidding, more than half of my satisfaction of user experience on Windows comes from this app.
Thanks for the effort on the updates.

    Love

  35. Sergio says:

You are the man! I can’t give a donation, but I am truly missing the software! Any predictions about a release date for the public?

Appreciate your efforts, hard to have a nice Windows experience without your software!

  36. jay lo says:

Running the 4/29 alpha, and everything is working great. happy to support the development of this program, and my guess is that it should be ready for public release soon 🙂

  37. vikash kumar says:

Thanks for the Taskbar tweaker. Running the 4/29 alpha, and everything is working great. I love this program

  38. If you set small icons on the taskbar, then set no_width_limit to 1 and shrink the taskbar to the minimum width (32px I think) then there is an issue whenever a new systray icon appears.

Instead of appearing below the > icon, the new icon appears to the left, completely offscreen apart from one or two pixels, very difficult to notice.

It’s not unique to the alpha, has been going on for a while, but it would be awesome if there was a way to fix this. I’ve tried the icon padding options but all they do is push the icons off-centre.

Aside from that, loving the alpha, does everything I needed it to!

    • The no_width_limit option is quite simple, all it does is removing the limit which the system imposes on the taskbar width. With this option, it might be possible to set a width which is too narrow, which will cause anomalies such as flickering icons, or the issues that you’re describing. Try widening the taskbar a bit, until the issue is gone, it should help.

  39. Grimzer says:

Alpha version working great now after getting the Could not load library (104) error.

    Thanks kindly!
