7+ Taskbar Tweaker

7+ Taskbar Tweaker
7+ Taskbar Tweaker allows you to configure various aspects of the Windows taskbar.
Most of the configuration options it provides can’t be tweaked using the taskbar properties or the registry.
The tweaker is designed for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

FAQ

Q: Which registry keys does 7+ Taskbar Tweaker modify? I don’t need extra processes in my system.
A: The only registry keys the tweaker modifies are its own settings. There are no registry keys for the options it provides. The tweaker does that by injecting a DLL to explorer, hooking/subclassing/some other methods of the dark side.
As for extra processes, the tweaker is a native program, and is very lightweight. It shouldn’t slow down your system, and uses an extremely small amount of memory. Also, you can hide the tray icon if you want.

In case you want to remove the tweaker’s settings from the registry, look for them here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\7 Taskbar Tweaker
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (“7 Taskbar Tweaker” value)

P.S. if you’re a programmer, you might want to take a look at the 7+ Taskbar Tweaking Library.

Q: My antivirus complains about 7+ Taskbar Tweaker.
A: It’s a false positive. I guarantee that the tweaker binaries (and any other files on this site, unless specifically noted) are 100% clean.
Also remember that the tweaker injects into explorer and modifies its memory, which is indeed suspicious.

Q: Can I Group/Combine/Label only some of the items on the taskbar?
A: Yes, use Taskbar Inspector.

Q: May I use 7+ Taskbar Tweaker in a commercial environment?
A: Yes, feel free to use it wherever you want.

Q: Where is the portable version?
A: When installing the tweaker, choose the Portable type of install, as shown on the image below.
The portable version will be extracted to the selected folder.

Selecting the portable installation type

Note: If the tweaker is already installed on your computer, the option won’t be visible. You can launch the setup with the /portable command line switch to force a portable installation.

Q: I want to report a bug/suggest a feature! What is the best way to do it?
A: Post it on the UserEcho page.

Q: I want to translate 7+ Taskbar Tweaker to my language.
A: The archive below contains the files needed to be translated.
Please read readme.txt before proceeding.

    • Sorry, but I don’t understand your question.

        Hey man!

Love the functionality and combination of tweaks this tool gives me. Absolutely fantastic work. AND you’re still responding to questions from users – you’re the best kind of person.

I think what Jacker is asking is if the settings he is using in the image will mimic the default behavior/look from XP.

Any chance we’ll ever see an even more stripped down version of 7TT with only the most basic of features?

        Cheers, and thanks again.

        • I have no plans to implement all the futures to make Windows 7 (and up) look/behave like XP.

        • Techie007 says:

Yes, you can make Windows 7 behave exactly as shown in that image.

1: Download and install Classic Shell (http://classicshell.net/) to fix the Start Menu. Once installed, you can choose which style Start Menu to use, and customize many settings. This works in Windows 7 or later, including Windows 10.

2: To enable the Quick Launch bar, right-click the Taskbar and click “Toolbars” -> “New toolbar..” In the browse dialog that opens, copy/paste this text into the “Filename” box and click [OK]: “%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch”

3: Change 7+TT’s “Taskbar items” -> “Right click” option to “Standard windows menu”

4: Change 7+TT’s “Taskbar items” -> “Hovering” option to “Tooltip”

5: Enable 7+TT’s “Other” -> “Hide the ‘Show desktop’ button” option.

  2. Jack says:

Wouldn’t it be good to have the start button on the top row while the task bar is on XP style and having multiple rows of task items, rather than in the middle.
    Thanks
    Jack

Hi there, thank you so much for this tiny app. I’ve been using it on all my Windows 7 PC and it works flawlessly – can’t live without it.

I see now Windows 10 is supported, but I can’t make the switch right now (damn forced updates) there’s just one feature in Windows 10 that I love – you can finally scroll on inactive window without bringing it to front!

Is it possible to get this feature on older Windows (7/8/8.1) via 7+TT? I found online that there’s a registry trick but it has some issues – if the focus only happens only when mouse wheel is scrolled, not just by moving on inactive windows, it would work perfectly. Is it doable? I’d like to avoid install another app for this matter (since I see that AlwaysMouseWheel also offers “Volume control when the mouse wheel on the taskbar” I’m afraid if it would break other 7+TT features related to mouse wheel on taskbar)

  5. Jack says:

Hi, RaMMicHaeL! I think I got the brilliant idea for your program) What do you think, is it worth adding such feature: to put in the center pinned items of Superbar? As in Mac OS. But here the point is not to copy the Mac, this is to ensure that the pinned items were always at hand, and not in the left corner.

  6. Tom Woodgeard says:

Hello; The only thing I want to do is add seconds to the task bar clock in windows 10.

Can I do this and not change anything else?

    Thank you!

    • Hi,
Sure, just install the tweaker and choose only that option. If you’re asking whether it’s possible to do it without the tweaker, then the answer is no (unless you find an alternative program, of course).

  7. CyberCrone says:

Thanks! The only thing I didn’t like so far in Windows 10 was the tiny taskbar icons, and you fixed that for me.

  9. Tinu says:

Nice 7TT runs on Win10. Some ideas to enhance it for Win10.

Whereever we can choose actions like in “Double click in free task bar”, include new Virtual Desktop options .. Win+TAB, maybe even Previous Screen, Next Screen, with cycling (configurable, yes/no) and then please to save somehow the last active (focused) window. Win10 does NOT and I hate it … when I switch to another screen, on my system, no window on target destop is focused, so i always have to click first to activate a window.

as a programmer, this annoys me a lot, switching from output desktop to editor … always have to click on editor when returning …

would be nice if 7tt could solve this little annoyance for us …

    FWIW.

    Thanks for 7tt

    Tinu

    • Whereever we can choose actions like in “Double click in free task bar”, include new Virtual Desktop options .. Win+TAB

Actually, “Ctrl+Win+Tab (Windows 7)” does that. I need to rename it at some point.

when I switch to another screen, on my system, no window on target destop is focused, so i always have to click first to activate a window.

Yeah, it’s one of the issues of the new virtual desktops feature. Another one is that the order of the taskbar buttons is not being preserved if you did manual reordering. I might look at fixing it in the future.

  10. Jackel says:

Thx for the great work. BTW, I wonder how can I disable win7’s taskbar always on top

  11. Bryan Prescott says:

Good morning. First, thank you for this wonderful program. I have a Win 7 machine – updated. Since the last update, I have not been able to get the program to show Thumbnail Hover View of programs on my task bar. It stays in list view, even thou the setting is set for default – Show In Thumbnail Preview (default).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    • Hi,

You imply that the tweaker causes the issue. Did you try closing it? Does it solve the problem?
In general, thumbnails are not shown if Aero is not enabled, so that might be the reason.

      • Bryan Prescott says:

I’ve been using your program for about a year now, and have not changed any settings, and up until recently, I always was able to view as thumbnails on my taskbar, using your program.

I didn’t imply it was the program, just letting you know what I have seen.

I have closed the app and restarted it, but still the same problem. Aero is enabled, just double checked it again.

but since you used a generic response to close program and you seem to take offense that I am having a minor problem with your program, I will figure it out myself and not bother you again with any issue pertaining to your program, since you are treating me like a neophyte with a computer. I’ve been working with computers long before you were born, and have forgotten more than you have learned.

So sir, I will close the program and reboot my machine and see if the ‘close program’ response works.

If that doesn’t work, then fuck it, I’ll reverse engineer what you have developed and correct issue, if I find one, myself.

        Good day

        • It seems like there has been some misunderstanding, Bryan. I didn’t take offense, and didn’t treat you like a neophyte. All I did was trying to help.

I didn’t imply it was the program, just letting you know what I have seen.

You wrote: “Since the last update, I have not been able to …”, hence my comment. As a first step, I wanted to find out whether the tweaker is responsible for the issue, so that I’ll know what to try next.

If you’re willing to cooperate, let me know. Otherwise, feel free to reverse engineer the tweaker as much as you want while searching for the issue.

  13. Stilez says:

    Hi,

I’ve been using 7+ for years now, really good job. I have a request for you if it’s not too hard. Can there be options to autoupdate more quietly when appropriate? Every update has to be done manually and the settings then dismissed manually. I’ve never had to change anything on an upgrade though. What this would mean –

    1) An option to automatically upgrade minor/low risk versions: 7+ uses the changelog to tell if upgrading to the current version is a “major” upgrade, or skips past a “major” upgrade, and if not, it just does automatically.

    2) An option to not open the settings dialog on upgrade unless the options it shows, have changed: If the upgrade won’t introduce new settings on the settings dialogue, then it doesn’t “splash” the settings screen after upgrading. It just displays a nice “toast” or balloon style message saying upgrade is complete.

Excellent programme and really needed on modern Windows. Thanks a million and thank you for all your work keeping it up to date!

    • Hi,

      Thanks for the feedback.
In fact, a new option for silent automatic updates was added recently. You can find it in the settings dialog.

Initially, I didn’t want to implement it (you can read about it here), but than I decided that it’s safe enough if the update takes place with a delay. Currently, the silent updater doesn’t update to a new version unless it’s been at least a week since it was released.

      • Stilez says:

That makes good sense! I see I should have asked 5 months and a few days ago 🙂 Thank you!! and thanks again for all the hard work!

  15. beergas says:

Thanks will try to see if can change taskbar color Win 10. I too misread the initial image as to the check box setting. Guess in the end I’d have tried both ways but sure did think it was intended to be left checked to use this software, else why be that way?
“The difference is that with the checbox checked, you get a darker palette based on the chosen color.”

  16. Magnus says:

I just discovered this program and it’s excellent. I’m curious if you could shed some light on how you hide the labels for a particular Application ID. That’s really the main feature I’m after and I would like to make my own tiny program with this feature. Any info would be much appreciated!

  17. Cuckoo Roller says:

Thanks a lot for that awesome tool! I am using the option to reorder buttons within a group.

I’d like to suggest another feature: Change text color of the task bar. It is always white with aero, so you cannot use bright window color settings and a bright background image. Black would be better in that case.

There seems to be a complicated way to achieve this by modifying a binary file: aero.msstyles.

  18. Quadrate says:

Hello! First of all thanks for such a great tool!

I know it has a setting to prevent app windows to minimize when icon on the toolbar clicked but this feature is not available via user interface. Could you please put here some instructions how to setup this? I used to have that feature but now I can not find the right registry keys to edit on the internet. Thanks in advance!

  19. Ethanicus says:

Very nice! Probably the most helpful thing on my computer at the moment.

  20. Tim says:

Could a feature to NOT display the volume indicator/mixer when using the scroll wheel to control volume over the taskbar be added?

The reason I’m asking, is because If you’re using another type of volume indicator, such as any vendor-specific overlay (like certain Logitech mouse drivers) or Rainmeter’s Volume plugin (like I do), seeing both of them can get a bit annoying at times 🙂

    Thanks in advance!

    • It’s already available as an advanced option. See the help file, the Advanced Options section, for more details.

  21. Honza Salajka says:

    Hi,

    really like software, very useful!

But there is one thing I can’t achieve no matter what I set. There is no need to show description for single instances and the icon is always enough here – that’s no problem. But for multiple instances, I would like to have them separated and ALWAYS show their descriptions. So in the end, single instances would be icons only, while multiple instances would always show descriptions not being grouped. The closest behavior to the above which I could achieve using your software is to show descriptions of multiple-instanced program on it’s icon hover, while single instanced-programs have always their descriptions hidden. But that’s not what I am looking for, even though it is close enough. Have I missed some settings, or am looking for something which isn’t included?

    Thanks for reply!

    Hi,

it would be great if you could fix Windows 10 Tray Tip behaviour. Windows 10 shows only 2 lines of tray tips. They are allways showen around 5 seconds. If the Tips are coming faster, they get queued. That is quite anoying. I use them for time critical debugging. That is not possible on Windows 10 at the moment.

Thank you for this great Software!

Thank you for the work on this great app! I have disable_topmost set to 2 and is the only thing I have changed after installation of 7+TT in Windows 10. In Windows Taskbar settings I have Lock the Taskbar checked, Auto-hide unchecked, Use small buttons checked, Taskbar located at the bottom, Taskbar buttons combine when full, and use Peek to preview unchecked. When I have a window over the Taskbar and press the Windows Key, the start menu opens but the Taskbar is not visible over the window. Is this a glitch, or is there 7+TT setting that I can use to correct?

  26. Hey says:

Just wanted to say thanks for this amazing little app. Used it forever with win7 and almost couldn’t deal with windows 10 not having these features.

The only thing missing from it is the ability to change the position of the taskbar icons. Being able to keep them in the center like OSX would be amazing. I use another program in conjunction with 7+ Tweaker to do this currently, called TaskDock. I’d love to see this feature make it into your program.

  27. RTM says:

  28. Mario says:

Your work seems tangential to something I would like to configure within Windows.

With two windows open, WinA and WinB, when you minimize WinA Windows7 automatically gives focus to the previously active window, WinB.

Is there a way to prevent the previously active window from getting focus? I don’t want to change the ability to minimize/maximize/restore window(s). I just want to prevent Windows7 from giving focus to a window simply because it happens to be there.

  31. Michael says:

I have one question regarding w10_large_icons settings, can you tell us what setting/registry does this affect? or is it possible to change to a custom size (say we could manually put 32). I found a little problem in win 10. When I have a quick launch toolbar on the taskbar, and taskbars is double height, even with w10_large_icons option on, there is not enough vertical space on the task bar to get quick launch icons to be auto-aligned in two rows, please see this screen as I find it difficult to explain in words esp. with my english skills:
    http://screencast.com/t/1i76TywYS1e

    it works this way:
    http://screencast.com/t/RT4VYMsSf

So is there a way to change that? eg. by changing task bar icons size or by adding an option to change quick launch icons size? or being able to change the taskbar row height?

I will appreciate any help Michael,
P.S. 7+tt is a brilliant tool, can’t use windows without it anymore so big thanks for making it and keeping it alive and big thumbs up for you!

    • I tried to make the w10_large_icons option have a customizable size, but it didn’t work out so well. I use a specific hack for this option, and except for 32, it doesn’t work well for other sizes (e.g. because the lower lines are on a fixed location, and for other reasons).

For your situation, the only thing I can suggest is to use pinned items instead of the toolbar (seems like you use both). In later versions of Windows, from my experience, the toolbar feature is a second-class citizen, i.e. the feature doesn’t integrate well with the look and feel of the rest of the taskbar.

    hello

    amazing program
    found it from here
    https://www.csparks.com/Win7TaskbarMasher/

apparently the creater of this suggest 7+ as better alternative

both programs do the job partially

masher creates a process that keeps all windows above taskbar
however when u maximize a program it doesnt cover the taskbar so u still loose a portion of the screen

7+ is pretty amazing and can actuallly override that so a window can cover the whole screen

howerver when it does pressing the window button opens the windows start menu but the taskbar is still hidden behind the maximized window

    how do i fix that?

  36. RetiredEngineer says:

Often I have several instances of IE-11 open, with all their tab titles stacked. It would be nice (productive) to see dividing lines between different IE instances. Without this, I often click a tab in the wrong IE window, and have to backtrack, as sometimes my tabs are poorly named and hard to differentiate if I don’t know which window they come from.

    • It cannot be easily done. The taskbar thumbnails are ordered from most recent to least recent, regardless of the window they’re attached to. So a dividing line isn’t going to help, as you can have the following:
      Window 1: Tab 1, Tab 2.
      Window 2: Tab 3, Tab 4.
      Thumbnails: Tab 1, Tab 4, Tab 2, Tab 3.

You might want to consider disabling grouping for IE, but that changes other things as well.

Another thing that you might want to consider is to disable thumbnail previews for IE. Then you’ll have one thumbnail per window, and not per tab.

I run W7 Home Premium x64, with the taskbar at screen bottom. If I move the taskbar to screen top, the position of Pinned and Recent menu items does not change — Pinned items remain next tool icons, which makes their selection much faster than when the taskbar is at screen bottom and it is Recent items which are next to tool icons.

Is there any way you can force Pinned menu items to be displayed next to the taskbar when it is at screen bottom?

  41. Ed says:

Ok, love the product. My main questions is there a way for the tweaker to remember where I left it as I have about 60 icons from the same program I am running and each time I close the program I have to put them back in order as to how I want to see them. Look forward to your response.

    Thanks Ed

  43. Rob says:

I finally updated to version 5 and immediately uninstalled it. I was so happy I had the setup file for version 4.5.6 saved. The reason I did not like it is that there is a problem with re-ordering entries in the Taskbar Inspector box. There is one program that I open multiple instances of, which are all under one group / heading. When I need to re-order the items in that list, I would simply drag the items up and down easily and without any issue. Now, what happens, is that as soon as I click on the item that I want to re-arrange, the long list (so all the programs listed) jumps up (the vertical bar goes down) so that the item I selected is at the very top of the list. If there is an item above that entry that I just clicked that I want to re-arrange, I now have to scroll up to select it. For an entry below, the list jumps up. This behavior is very annoying and makes it very difficult and inconvenient to re-arrange items on the list.

This is on a Windows 7 (I am pretty sure it’s a 64 bit) computer.

7+ Taskbar Tweaker 5.0.0.0 and 5.0.0.3 (beta) have been running fine under Windows 10 (Home version 64-bit) until Microsoft’s recent Nov 2015 Windows 10 major update.

After the update, my screen “flashes” and the icons on the taskbar appear properly and then disappear…continuously. When I delete 7+ Taskbar Tweaker, this problem goes away. If I reinstall 7+, the problem returns.

I love 7+ Taskbar Tweaker, so I hope you can find a resolution to this problem soon.

BTW, this problem does NOT appear on my other computers (all similar make and models as the Win 10 “home” version machine) except the other computers are running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit . My Windows 10 “Pro” version computers appear to have received the latest November updates, but 7+ continues to run without problems.

Well, after careful examination, it now appears my Windows 10 Pro 64-bit computers were automatically updated yesterday with the latest Windows 10 major update…and 7+ Taskbar Tweaker is no longer working properly!

With 7+ Taskbar Tweaker installed, I’m seeing the same screen “flashing” problem I mentioned in my previous post…which only occurs with 7+ Taskbar Tweaker installed. The screen flashing problem immediately goes away when 7+ Taskbar Tweaker is uninstalled.

I have now confirmed this problem on four separate Windows 10 computers…all with Microsoft’s Nov 2015 Windows 10 major update installed.

Hopefully, you can fix the problem that Microsoft created.

Surely you don’t expect MS to test every 3rd party program that runs under their operating system.

A primary purpose of the Windows Insider Program is to provide a vehicle to 3rd party developers to test and modify their software before new versions of Windows are released.

I’m not getting the severe problem you have, the taskbar occasionally refreshes for no apparent reason, but I think that was happening with the previous release.

Have a look in Settings->Update & security->Recovery, you should see an option to go back to previous Windows 10 release.

Never combine & hide labels isn’t working for me on the latest Windows build (10586.3). Here’s a screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/qYtjJZU.png
